For as long as I can remember, dogs and cats have eaten dry pellets called kibble. Mind you, I’m not a spring chicken, nor am I older than Methuselah (as my grandfather used to say). But, for the last 60 years or so, big companies have spent significant amounts of money to convince us that our pets can actually thrive on mediocre ingredients, colored to make it look appealing to us and preserved with who knows what allow us to buy it in bulk and store it in our garages in large plastic tubs for years….yuck.
Significant research into optimal nutrition for our dogs and cats has been conducted over the years, and although it is true that some of these commercial foods are better than they used to be, the fact remains that you cannot change the way a body functions simply by forcing it to subsist on a diet that it’s not designed to handle. Read the ingredient panel of your pets’ food and see how it measures up (even, some of the "prescription" diets don’t cut the mustard)
So, let’s say once and for all (despite what some big marketing firms would have you believe):
- GRAINS, ESPECIALLY WHEAT, CORN & SOY ARE NOT A NECESSARY PART OF YOUR PET’S DIET, BUT CAN BE DETRIMENTAL IN MANY WAYS
- BY-PRODUCTS ARE AN UNACCEPTABLE INGREDIENT IN PET FOOD
- BHA, BHT & ETHOXYQUIN ARE CHEMICAL FORMS OF PRESERVATIVES WHICH MAY BE HARMFUL & HAVE NO PLACE IN OUR PET’S FOODS
Some points in reference:
- Dogs and cats’ bodies do not synthesize the enzymes required to digest and metabolize starches or fruits & vegetables in their raw form.
- Dogs and cats do not use carbohydrates for energy, they utilize fats and proteins.
- Dogs and cats have more concentrated acids in their digestive system which kill harmful bacteria before they can do any harm. These same acids allow them to digest bone as well as feathers, fur and other offal.
