San Diego Pet-Friendly Parks
Below are a few choices of the many. Some near an animal shelter… just in case you’ve been thinking of adding a "sister or brother" for your pooch. Check these out for different places to play and share the fun with other pet owners.

Here are some generally accepted park rules. It's best the be safe and contact the individual park you plan to visit, OR visit www.sandiego.gov/park-and-recreation for more information.

  • Dogs should be leashed prior to entering and upon leaving the park
  • Owners must remain with dogs. closely supervise children, and carry a leash within fenced area.
  • Owners must clean up after their dogs.
  • Dogs should be licensed and vaccinated.
  • Dogs exhibiting dangerous behavior are prohibited.
  • Dogs should be wearing a collar with identification at all times.
  • Puppies under four months of age may be prohibited.
  • Dogs in heat are prohibited.
  • Limit three dogs per person per visit.

Carlsbad

Carlsbad [Ann D Lheureux Memorial] Dog Park
Take Carlsbad Village Dr. to ½ east of El Camino Real [location on the left with parking lot]

13,200 square feet of fenced area with benches, drinking fountain, pick up bag dispensers.

Chula Vista

Montevalle Park
840 Duncan Ranch Road
7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Two fenced partially grassed areas divided for large and small dogs. Benches, restrooms, water fountains.

Otay Ranch Town Center Dog Park
2015 Birch Rd. (sw area of new Mall)
10 a.m. - 11 p.m. lighted
10,000 squarefoot grassy shaded divided for large and small dogs. Benches and water fountains, tables chairs, nearby coffee shop. vet and grooming services This is most entertaining and features a giant fire hydrant, dog bone and doghouse.

Coronado

Coronado Dog Beach
Ocean Blvd near Sunset park
Leash free in restricted area.

El Cajon

Wells Park
1153 E. Madison Ave.
7 a.m. - 9 p.m.daily
Shady areas with large and small dog areas with benches restrooms and pick up bag dispensers. Night lighting.

Crickets Corner Dog Park
389 Requeza (Adjacent and part of Rancho Coastal Humane Society)
Tues & Thurs 2pm - 5pm,Sat - Sun 11am - 5pm
Nearly an acre fenced in, shaded, grass-covered park. Built-in water fountain (one for you, one for your dog!) Benches . Separate, enclosed area for small dogs and puppies (11 weeks and older) Also available for parties!

4 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily [no lighting or potable water]
A mainly dirt dog park is fenced, gate accessible from the paved road. The island area has also a lengthy stretch of shoreline, benches, portable toilets. Subject to change.

Nate's Point - Balboa Park
(24 hr. Partially lighted]
Balboa Dr. off El Prado, south side of Cabrillo Bridge.
Large shaded grassy area. Benches, pickup bags, fountains.

Ocean Beach

Dusty Rhodes Park
(24-hr. off-leash) Closed Mondays, 6-9am for maintenance.
Sunset Cliffs Blvd. between Nimitz and West Point Loma Blvd.
1.5 acre, fenced area.

Dog Beach Dog Park
24 hours.
Voltaire Street. And W. Point Loma Blvd.
This very popular spot has "painted paws" in the sand leading to the leash free surf area. Dual-level drinking fountain and restrooms. No fencing.

Open 7am - 7pm, Closed Wednesday, on rainy days and 24 hours after
1.5 acre fenced grassy park, benches drinking fountain, pick up dispensers.

Capehart Dog Park
Corner of Feldspar Street and Soledad Mountain Road, just south of Beryl Street
Open 24 hrs [no lighting]
A daytime favorite – this one-acre park offers two grassy fenced large and small dog areas picnic tables, benches, drinking fountains, and a portable toilet.

Balboa Park - Grape Street Park
Grape Street at 28th Street
(leash-free hours) Mon - Friday: 7:30 a.m. - 9 p.m. Sat, Sun, and Holidays: 9 a.m. - 9 p.m
Lighted large,grass dog-run area with shady trees, benches,fountains. Wooden crossbar fenced. Dogs could escape.

Poway

Poway Dog Park

Rancho Bernardo Dog Park
18448 W. Bernardo Dr. Open dawn to dusk. Closed Thurs 10am-12pm. closed Thurs, 10 a.m.- noon.
A double-fenced area split into three smaller areas This park is very large, with grass, trees, benches, and three biodegradable disposable bag dispensers in each area.
