Reiki as a Complementary Healing Modality
With a house full of rescues and castaways, not to mention years of personal involvement in animal-related causes, I have a deep appreciation for the Veterinary community. It is always recommended that your companion animals remain under a veterinarian’s care to maintain optimum health. However, many people are looking toward alternative healing modalities as a complement to conventional treatments. Reiki is an ideal choice for those wanting to address physical and emotion issues from a holistic perspective.
Reiki is a system of healing introduced to Japan by Mikao Usui in the early 20th Century. Although spiritual in nature, it has no religious affiliation. Reiki’s therapeutic effects come from the transference of radiant energy from the hands of the practitioner to the recipient. The process is non-invasive, non-manipulative, and non-intrusive. No ‘negative’ energy can be transferred in either direction. This flow of energy provided by the Reiki practitioner is used by the body to restore a disruption or imbalance of vital life force we all require to be healthy and experience a sense of well-being.
Animals are naturally energetically sensitive beings, and tend to respond very favorably to Reiki. It is not necessary to make physical contact with the animal in order to receive the full benefits of a Reiki treatment. Since energy can neither be created nor destroyed, Reiki can transcend time and space; therefore, distance healings are possible. Healing energy can be sent to people or animals, places, events, or situations, past, present, or future. Practical applications include: boosting natural healing capabilities before and after surgery or other medical treatments, alleviating anxiety due to a change in lifestyle, boarding, and making the transition easier for a terminally ill pet.
Reiki is a gentle, yet profound holistic healing alternative that enhances the body’s natural ability to heal itself, create emotional and physical balance, and promote an over-all sense of well-being.

Houston Humane Society Helps Erase Pet Overpopulation By Altering Male Cats at No Cost
(February 20, 2008) - On February 13th, 2008, the Houston Humane Society Wellness Clinic, with help from all HHS Staff and HHS Volunteers, neutered 488 male cats at no charge. Neutering 488 cats will literally prevent millions of kittens from being born and further contributing to pet overpopulation and homelessness.
