Rancho Coastal Humane Society - Saving Animals from Domestic Violence

Sometimes words alone do tell the whole story. For victims of domestic violence, knowing that there is a program that will protect their animals from their abusers gives them hope and strength to carry on. The Animal Safehouse Program was created in 1997 as a result of domestic violence shelters contacting our local Rancho Coastal Humane Society, seeking help for their clients with pets. The ASP is one of four programs statewide (the ONLY one in southern CA). There are only 74 such programs in the whole nation. The purpose of the program is not only to provide resources for domestic violence victims and their pets, but also to educate the community on the link between domestic violence and animal abuse.

San Diego Coalition Formed to Further Decrease County Euthanasia Rates

(San Diego, CA - October 4, 2007) San Diego animal sheltering organizations have joined forces in an unprecedented effort to save more animal lives in San Diego County. Today, on "World Animal Day," eight organizations with shelters in the county announced the formation of the San Diego Animal Welfare Coalition (SDAWC). The primary purpose of this unique coalition is to work collectively to save the lives of all healthy and treatable companion animals in San Diego.

The eight organizations, including the Chula Vista Animal Care Facility, County of San Diego Department of Animal Services, El Cajon Animal Shelter, Escondido Humane Society, Helen Woodward Animal Center, North County Humane Society and SPCA, Rancho Coastal Humane Society, and the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA, have all committed to working with each other in order to develop a safety net for healthy, homeless companion animals. By collaborating with each other, none of the coalition shelters have had to euthanize a healthy animal since October 2006.

Summer Camps - Where Kids Have Fun & Learn Pet Responsibility!

Youngsters who participate in spring and summer camp programs at the various humane societies learn something that most students don't:

  • They learn about animals and how to be responsible caretakers and petowners!
  • Kids can learn about what "parenting" really means

Whatever the species, students learn that having a pet comes with responsibilities, in addition to the fun, enjoyment and entertainment they bring into our lives. The primary message of the spring and summer camp is that animals have needs and feelings that require daily attention.  Animals in that regard are not much different from raising a child.  Students learn that animal caretakers need to know and practice the list of activities that come with having a pet.  They are, in no particular order: attention/affection, exercise, socialization, nutrition and grooming.

Proper handling of animals also has special emphasis, because all animals are different.  Having a pet means learning to understand their needs, wants and feelings, and acting upon them appropriately.  It also means being gentle and patient.

Proper handling of different pets results in safety for all. Youngsters don't always realize their strength and force, and ability to hurt.  Small animals as well as large animals can be hurt and injured if not handled properly. An important benefit of humane society summer camps is that students who learn at a young age about proper care and handling of animals carry this in to their adult years - and these influences carry over to their peers and family members.

These are valuable lessons in life - so give yourself and your kid a great time AND a great opportunity - GET THEM TO A HUMANE SOCIETY SUMMER CAMP!

A Family Fish Story

The first thing you may notice upon entering Harbor Fish & Chips is the large display of mounted fish on the walls, but the reason you walked in just may have been the inviting aroma emanating from this Oceanside landmark.

This family-owned and operated restaurant was started in July of 1969 by a long-time commercial fishing family, Doug and Sally McWha. Sally passed away in 1975, but her personal touches still linger on at this popular, well-known restaurant. You'll find her original homemade recipes for tartar sauce, cocktail sauce, and the big favorite, fresh coleslaw, all made from scratch and served proudly by owner Terry Cross. Sally's high standards of good service are reflected in the friendly, polite, smiling faces that greet you as you place your order. the quality meals for which she worked so hard have given Harbor Fish & Chips the famous reputation it enjoys today.

Visiting Harbor Fish & Chips is an adventure in itself. Come and enjoy old style friendliness, awesome views, good food and meander through the countless memorabilia and photos of great fishing days gone by. Most of all, sit back and relax in the peacefulness and beauty of the Oceanside Harbor, surrounded by fantasies of yesteryear!
